DR BEN ATTAH FOUNDATION

WHY AN EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION?

I was born in a village called Obufi in Okobo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria many years ago. I grew up in poverty. I attended public primary and secondary schools. Life was fun until the death of my father, Mr. Ekpenyong Attah on December 31, 1975.

After my father’s demise, life became bitter. My mother needed to provide for seven children (aged 1-14 years), coupled with other family pressures from my only surviving uncle then. She couldn’t cope with the financial demands for our education. The decision was easy – some people had to stop going to school. I was among those to stop going to school. We had to resign to God’s mercy and grace.

From January to June 1976, I was in the village with no hope of when I’ll ever return to school. Thank God for the youthful enthusiasm! During this period, I organized all the local boys aged 5-9 for matching. As St Vincent’s College band plays for the early morning match pass; we file out and carry out a match pass to and from the village’s market. It was real fun!

By the end of June 1976, God in His infinite goodness showed up and I returned to school. My return to school was not without a thought. How do people that don’t have parents survive in this world? I thought to myself. During this period, a made a vow to myself that if God should help me to go school, I’ll support others who don’t have the means to acquire western education.

Initially, it sounded like a gimmick. As I grow up, the thought became stronger and compelling. How I manage to acquire University education is still like a drama to me. Graduating with the best overall academic performance at the University of Calabar convocation in 1983 brought the thought alive in my mind. It is possible to have children without parental financial sponsorship becoming graduates. I am an example.

This drive has refused to die. I would like to be part of the storyline of others. I would support education at all levels. I might not be able to do much due to financial limitation. Whatever happens we are starting in 2023. We will start small and tell people what we are doing. I am trusting God that some well-spirited individuals shall join forces with me as we give back to society and put smiles on some faces.
